It is a appropriately somber day for the 9/11 anniversary. I will always know how long I have lived in NY, because I moved out here on Sept 18, 2001. The future seemed uncertain, and I was moving into an area that had suffered incredible loss. People picked up the pieces though, and NY has come back to life. There was never a doubt in my mind about coming to live out here, and I am glad that I did.

Offbeat 9/11 story...
One of the guys in our physics department has been sending up balloon experiments. On 9/11/2007 he launched one from Taylor University, a little school south of Fort Wayne. The balloons typically stay aloft several hours, and the wind forecast has the balloon landing just NE of Columbus, OH, between a lake and I-71.
The first misadventure came when the balloon snagged a power line. That took out power to the Taylor campus! We have a nice, charred payload pod as a memento.
The rest of the balloon worked free, did it's climb to 90,000 feet or so, and landed in the lake near Columbus. The folks who recovered it were sailing and saw this parachute descending toward them, trailing a chain of shiny boxes. It splashed down about 30 feet away, and they were thinking, "OMG, it's 9/11... maybe someone's trying to poison the water supply!" They fired up the motor and fished it out pronto
