Mike and I got into a discussion about mascots tonight. We noticed that the following mascot types are not generally represented:
primates
rodents (except the MIT beavers, and occasional gophers)
African animals (elephants, hyenas, zebras, hippos, giraffes)
insects (I know about the banana slug)
most birds (except Raptors and things like Cardinals)
most fish (How about "Go Flounders"?)
Ungulates
fruits and vegetables
Speaking of flounder, what the hell is up with those fish? They are too ugly to eat. I wonder if their mothers love their looks.

Cal Tech is also the Beavers.
What about ridiculous mascots? I think the stupidest (and most confusing) is Stanford. The "Cardinal". The color not the bird. How stupid is that? And their mascot is a tree, for no apparent reason.
I will admit, the banana slugs are pretty stupid too.
